Title: Cadence VPCD is EOL ?
Post by pancho_hideboo on Jun 9th, 2009, 6:02am

I heard a rumor that Cadence VPCD(Virtuoso Passive Component Designer) is End-Of-Life.

Is this true ?
If so, when will it be excluded from MMSIM package ?
Any expert of Cadence Tools, teach me.

I posted a question previously and Andrew said VPCD is in limited-support mode, so I wouldn't be surprised if its EOL now.

The tool always seemed incomplete to me and Andrew also mentioned that the 'custom inductor/transformer' features have been dropped (although they are still present in the GUI).

Cadence told their existing customers in 2008 Q4 that they were discontinuing development and sales of their VPCD and VRFD products. It was supposedly a business decision due to lack of sales.

Cadence's normal procedure is to keep the code in their installation until it becomes so obsolete that it doesn't work anymore. They won't really cut off any existing users (who are paying on-going maintenance), but they also won't allow any new purchases of licenses for those products.

I don't think so.

I can't launch pakage modeler even as stand alone tool by invoking "pkg" command now although an executable binary file of package modeler still exists as "$CDS_INST_DIR/tools/dfII/bin/pkg".

Current status of VPCD is right this.

It's end-of-lifed, as references have noted. We continue to support critical issues for key customers, but there will be no new sales.

The general process is to leave the executables around for a while, so that legacy users can still use them, but after a few releases they will be removed. As I just appended in the post by Pancho Hideboo about pkg, pkg has been removed in IC61X.

Regards,

Andrew.

Is there any tool from competitors similar to VPCD?

If no, how to best do now what VPCD used to do (e.g. designing spiral inductors)?

Thanks.
